Remembering our Veteran’s

Veterans Day is not only about honoring those who have lost their lives in battle protecting our beautiful country, it also commemorates those who have sacrificed much for us and our country.

Wednesday, November 11th marks the day when we honor all of our military men and women, Veterans Day. Veterans Day is not only about honoring those who have lost their lives in battle protecting our beautiful country, it also commemorates those who have served but are now retired from the military. This holiday gives us Americans the opportunity to express our gratitude for those in the military who risk their lives every single day in order to protect us and our country. If you know any veterans, be sure to let them know how thankful you are for their service in the military. We have a tendency to forget about those older veterans but we should show them the same appreciation they we show our newer, younger veterans. “It has gotten a lot better in the past 10 years. Vietnam Veterans did not get as much recognition, suffering through Veterans Affairs. People cheered me on, but the older Vets had no help” says Air Force Veteran, Coach Koval.

The history behind how this holiday came to be is one that occurred all the way back in the year 1918. The Treaty of Versailles was signed to end WWI and the cease in fighting took place during an armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This is why it is held on November 11th and the reason why it was known as Armistice Day. It became a legal holiday on May 13th, 1938.

Veterans Day is important to us Americans, but it really does mean a lot more to the veterans and their families. “I am proud to have a day where I am shown extra appreciation for my service,” says Navy Veteran, Woodrow Davidson. Veterans are shown an extra bit of respect and are fully appreciated. They are being recognized for all their accomplishments and hard work that it takes to be in the military. The bravery and courage it takes for them to have done what they did is so honorable and inspirational. “We have to remember the people who served and it is a good way to honor them and thank them for keeping America free” says Army Veteran, Ms. Jeraldine Macklin. Patriotism is a huge aspect of veterans’ lives and the fact that they are not only fighting for their country, but each and every one of us Americans.
