Menchville’s Newest Teachers Give Us Their Story

Why did you want to come to Menchville?
I was a student teacher here at Menchville and was asked to do an interview and got the job.
What schools did you teach at before?
I was a teacher’s assistant at Crittenden Middle School and observed Science classes.
What expectations do you have for your students?
My expectations are be here in mind and physically never say, “I can’t” and always stay focused.
What hobbies do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I enjoy playing with my dog and I enjoy reading
What was your favorite class in high school?
My favorite class was English.

Why did you want to come to Menchville?
I wanted to come to Menchville because Virginia is a very nice state. I know that Menchville is the cream of the crop. I know that if you come to Menchville you work hard and that this is the best school in the area.
What schools did you teach at before?
Technically I have not had a full year of teaching anywhere, I am a “freshmen” teacher, so Menchville is technically the first school I have taught at. I have had teaching experiences up in New York. I have taught all levels, elementary, middle and high school students, mostly in New York, where I went to high school, the elementary school in the same town and a high school in the next town over.
How many years of experience do you have in teaching?
This is my first year of teaching.
How do you handle your students?
Generally I treat everyone the way I want to be treated. I wouldn’t want anyone to be up in my face when I did something wrong. I try not to raise my voice. If anyone makes a mistake I try to make it known that you wont get made fun of that we are a team in this room. No body will laugh at you. “What ever mistakes the student has made the master has made a hundred times over.” So in order to learn you need mistakes to learn.
What expectations do you have for your students?
High expectations, even if you aren’t the best with math, give me a strong attempt and you make progress with math and your own life. Have you made your self better with organization. I expect homework and the students to be prepared.
What hobbies do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I love art, I love to draw. I love outdoor activities, kayaking, biking fishing.
What was your favorite class in high school?
I would have to say my favorite class in high school was probably art.

Why did you want to come to Menchville?
I heard about Menchville being the best in Newport News and I wanted to become part of the team.
What schools did you teach at before?
I taught at Woodside High school and Crittenden Middle
How many years of experience do you have?
I have about 2 years of experience.
How do you handle your students?
I’m always respectful of their personal opinions and personal space. I always try to maintain a good relationship with my students.
What expectations do you have for your students?
To do what is asked of them and to follow the rules and bring class materials with them everyday.
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I enjoy reading, spending time with my husband and going to the movies.
What was your favorite class in high school?
I enjoyed Drama.
Mrs. Carlyon Bock
Why did you want to come to Menchville?
Mr. Surry had asked for me to teach here. He and I worked together before since 1982.
What schools did you teach at before?
I taught at Kecoughtan high school, Dunbar Middle School and Gildersleeve Middle School.
How many years of experience do you have in teaching?
I have 31 years of teaching experience
How do you handle your students?
With respect, I think that there should be a mutual respect in a classroom.
What expectations do you have for your students?
I expect my students to do as well as they can with guidance and support to be able to pass the SOL.
What hobbies do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I enjoy reading; movies (Particularly the older movies from the 40’s 50’s and 60’s) and I love to travel.
What was your favorite class in high school?
My favorite class in high school was Latin.
