MHS Cheer Team: New & Improved
Menchville’s Varsity Cheer Team has a new look this year. With only seven cheerleaders returning to the squad of sixteen, the team has a mix of girls. Some have been cheering since they’ve been toddlers, and others are brand new to the sport.
Having a smaller team has made the girls much closer. Talking about her transition from JV to Varsity, Junior Sarah Girard said, “Transferring to varsity was so much fun, you actually get to be around your team a lot more and practice with each other and form new friendships. It was a little hard, but I am stronger now, and I feel like a better athlete”.
Selena Spence also voiced her thoughts about cheering this season, “I went from being a front spot last year to becoming a flyer this year which caused me to realize I was going to be the one being tossed in the air during stunts, but its my favorite thing to do. I’m a senior this year, so I’m trying to make the best out of it. I am going to miss cheering so much, but I’m glad I can spend my last year with my family”.
Coach Renate Pavusa gave the following thoughts on the upcoming season:
“MHS cheerleading has grown into something to be proud to be a part of. With the majority of the team being brand new it has made way for a fresh start and a new approach on how things will be handled. The standards have been raised and goals have been set. This year our Varsity cheer squad is filled with young athletes that have dedicated themselves daily to representing our school as champions. With focus, determination, school spirit, and support I am confident that our goals will be met! For the future I only see more improvement and growth.”
