Lady Monarch’s Soccer Wins in Thrilling Overtime Game

Warwick High School and Menchville High School is the biggest rivalry in athletics and academics in Newport News.  It was no surprise that a girl’s soccer Conference semi-final game be the two sides would be close and tense.  The Menchville Monarchs went down two goals in the first fifteen minutes.  After the second goal, Monarch’s goalkeeper Britney Baum laid on the ground holding her face.  The athletic trainer ran onto the field and suggested that the junior goal tender be removed.  Sophomore, outside midfielder, Alexis Fabila, was the Monarch’s next option to put on the gloves.  Shortly after Fabila stepped in the goal, the Monarchs gave up a free kick just outside the 18 yard box.  Junior midfielder for the lady Raiders, Sienna Grau, placed the kick perfectly in the upper left corner.  The Monarch’s then faced a three goal deficit.  Bringing a breath of life to the Monarch’s team, Senior, Nelia Perez, scored a goal with five minutes remaining in the half.  The second half brought a new light to Menchville; within the first two minutes the Monarch’s cut the Raider lead to one goal.  The Raider’s held off the pressing Monarch offense until the last seven minutes of the game when Junior forward, Gillian Niesel scored to tie the game.
