The Final Victim of 2016
One of the biggest New Years Eve shows, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, ended 2016 with a bang. Performing last, Mariah Carey’s set caught everyone’s attention – rising to the top trending spot on Twitter within minutes. What seemed to be going fine at first went downhill soon after starting. It was obvious Carey was lip syncing when she pulled the microphone away from her face while her vocal track was still playing. It seems technical problems with her ear piece prevented her from hearing the vocal track. The sound producer here at Menchville , Gabe Odachowski , said the problems with the sound could have been prevented by doing things such as checking monitors, and turning the stage monitors on so she could hear the song. In the transition between the first and second song, when the feathers move away from Carey, you can see that one of the dancers is tying to fix something behind Carey. This could have been the sound piece that fell or had a dead battery.
According to the Rolling Stone website, Carey’s representative, Nicole Perna, said Dick Clark Productions “set Carey up to fail.”
The company replied saying, “To suggest that DCP … would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd. In very rare instances there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television, however, an initial investigation has indicated that DCP had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance.”
With the problems Carey faced during her performance it is no surprise she made some of the first headlines of 2017. Within seconds of her performance, Carey was the top trending hashtag on twitter, prompting national responses – here are some tweets Bet.com posted.
Carey took to twitter the next morning and responded to the media criticism with the following tweet:
“*Stuff* happens ? Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!? Here’s to making more headlines in 2017 ? pic.twitter.com/0Td8se57jr”
