Miss Peregrine is a Very Interesting Film
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children was released to the movie theaters on September 30, 2016. My initial thoughts were that this movie was going to be really cool, visually, and that the storyline seemed really interesting. When the first commercial for the film aired on television I was very excited because Tim Burton was the director and he always makes amazing movies. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children interested me because it received very good reviews.
In the movie a boy named Jake (Asa Butterfield) is sent to stay with his grandfather for the night during a big storm. His grandfather is killed by the storm so Jake has to return home. His father gives Jake a letter from his grandfather telling Jake to go to Miss Peregrine’s Home to meet the children and to protect them. Jake’s dad was reluctant to take Jake to Miss Peregrine’s house, but after Jake persuaded his dad, his dad took Jake to meet Miss Peregrine and her children.
When they arrived where the house was supposed to be, they learned it was destroyed during World War II. However, Jake discovers the “loop” that keeps the house safe and enters into a strange world. In this world some people have peculiarities and can do extraordinary things. For example, Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) is the keeper of the children and she made the “loop” on the day that the house was bombed. Jake meets the children and the first one he meets is a girl named Emma Bloom (Ella Purnell) whose peculiarity is air; she also serves as Jake’s love interest throughout the movie.
As Jake learns more and more about the children and the history of the loop, he also uncovers some dark secrets. Such as, a man named Barron (Samuel L. Jackson), who is a Wight, tried to turn himself immortal by taking the souls of the keepers (like Miss Peregrine). but when he tried his experiment the first time with some of his colleagues they were transformed into the movies villains – Hollows- losing their peculiarities. To be fully immortal with their peculiarity the hollows must consume a certain amount of peculiar souls, by eating their eyes. Jake, along with the help of the peculiar children he meets, battles the Hollows to free all of the loops around the world from these beasts.
Overall I would give the movie a 9/10 because, even though the movie was visually excellent, I wish it would have given the audience a little more information about all of the peculiar children in Miss Peregrine’s time loop. There are two twins that wear off white jumpsuits, that cover their face, for the entire movie and their faces are not revealed until the very end of the film. I would have like a small background of how they acquired their peculiarities and what they do. However, I do highly recommend seeing this movie at some point in the near future because it is a good family movie with something for everyone; there is drama, romance, comedy, action, and even suspense.
