DECA Opens Menchville Monarch Credit Union

This is a student run credit union, started by Menchville’s CTE teacher, Ms.Young.

Wednesday, November 18th, marked the grand opening of the Menchville Monarch Credit Union. This is a student run credit union, sponsored by Menchville’s CTE teacher, Ms. Adriane Young and  the Virginia Educator’s Credit Union.  It is located directly across from  the library and is open on purple days, except Mondays, during both lunch periods. Students can open their own account or use a preexisting account they have one.   The Monarch Credit Union is completely trustworthy and 100% confidential.

The Monarch Credit Union is a way for students and teachers to “Get cash, make deposits.” The grand opening was attended by Dr. Ashby Kilgore (NNPS Superintendent) and Mr. Teddy Hicks (school board member).  Barneya Collins, Charity Smith and Michael Jones held the ribbon and Dr. Kilgore used a giant pair of scissors to cut and commemorate the official opening. The first person to make a deposit was Mr. Surry.

The Monarch Credit Union is a great way for students and teachers to have cash readily available if need be. Students can put money in their account and use it for lunch or save it and use it for something big such as prom costs or college funds.  It is also a “great way to teach about financial literacy,” according to Mr.Surry.

Members of DECA are responsible for the operation of the credit the credit union.  Seniors Barneya Collins, Charity Smith, and Michael Jones all hold leadership positions within the organization.  “You can trust your money with us,” Barneya Collins said.  Everyone should stop by the Monarch Credit Union and see what it is all about.
