The 2024 to 2025 school year introduced many changes at Menchville High School. One of these changes was the introduction of a new head-principal, Mr.Hollar. And the introduction to our focus for this article, the new sophomore assistant principal, Mrs. Comfort. Mrs. Comfort transferred to Menchville from Woodside High School where she created new technologies, programs, and systems for the school to use. Already at Menchville, Mrs. Comfort has brought over these systems and is developing as the year goes on to better our school. Myself and other journalism students had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Comfort and see what plans she has for our school.
To begin the interview, the group asked, “What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?”. Mrs.Comfort replied by saying she enjoys spending time with her family, especially chatting with her daughter, and reading when she has the time. We then asked her, “What do you like most about Menchville?”. Comfort said that she was pleasantly surprised by the nice interactions with students and their kindness along with the positive work environment cultivated by staff. Next, we asked, “What plans do you have for the sophomore students this school year?”. Mrs. Comfort commented on having a type of committee to represent the sophomore class and meeting with them frequently to ask their opinions on how things are being run and what she can do to support and improve our learning environments. After this, we inquired about her decisions to work within the public school system. Comfort remarked on how being a teacher or administrator wasn’t always her aspiration, she had always wanted to work with kids but wanted to be a psychiatrist. However, she worked with highschool students in college and began to fall in love with the idea of teaching, starting with special education and moving onto math, then administration.
To focus more on Mrs.Comfort’s work environment and approach, we asked, “What makes a good day at school?”. Comfort mentioned how she enjoys spirit days and school celebrations because of the joy and excitement in students and how it promotes unity and pride throughout the school, even if there is some sense of chaos from revised schedules and rowdy students. Finally, we wanted to explore Mrs. Comforts sense of self in terms of her teaching, to do so, we questioned her about what makes her distinct and unique from other principals. Comfort excitedly noted that she utilizes new technologies to improve the functions of the school and make things run more smoothly. She stated that her motto is “Work smarter, not harder!”, and that she will find ways to leverage technologies to the school’s benefit. She even sheepishly admitted that she had developed the new tardy pass system that teachers love and kids that skip, may not enjoy that much.
Overall, with the new addition of Mrs. Comfort to Menchville, we should expect new technologies, more say in how school is run, and a newfound sense of school spirit!
