Earth Day 2022

Every year on April 22, we are reminded of the burdens the world has placed on the environment. Smog fills the air, trash litters the ground, and plastic crowds the waterways. Technological innovations over the past few decades ranging from vapes to the increased production of cars emitting exhaust gasses have left detrimental impacts on the environment.
Back in late 2019 and early 2020, US schools were filled with what was known as VSCO girls. VSCO girls were seen carrying hydro flasks and raising environmental awareness through metal straws and purchasing from eco-friendly companies. Today, the global event raises awareness for our ecosystem that is facing global warming, air and water pollution, and environmental degradation among many more issues.
Earth Day has a different theme every year and this year’s theme is Invest in Our Planet. In prior years the themes have raised awareness about plastic pollution, species extinction, and climate change. This year’s theme focuses on everyone playing their part in ensuring a sustainable society. The message spans from persuading governments to shift gears toward clean energy and encouraging businesses to switch to eco-friendly products to convincing individuals to make their voices heard through public demonstrations and acts of service.
The event reminds people of all nations to contribute to cleaning the environment whether it be through picking up trash in the community or carpooling with friends and family. Earth day is an annual event that should be celebrated every day; however, a yearly reminder encouraging environment clean-up takes us one step further to make our world a happier and healthier place to live.
