NHTSA Issues Recalls for Millions of Passenger Vehicles, Buses, Trucks and RVs Over Fire Risks, Seat Defects and Drive Power Loss

Rows of cars, trucks and buses affected by a new NHTSA recall campaign

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a broad new round of safety recalls involving passenger vehicles, commercial buses, heavy-duty trucks, trailers and recreational vehicles. The campaigns reach across multiple manufacturers and cover a wide range of problems, from sudden loss of drive power to seat and steering defects, lighting failures and fire risks.

Automakers and equipment makers named in the recalls include Ford, Toyota, BMW, General Motors, Chrysler parent FCA US, PACCAR, Daimler Trucks, Gillig, Forest River Bus, Battle Motors, Nova Bus, Wabash National, Great Dane Trailers, Heartland Recreational Vehicles and Ember Recreational Vehicles. Under federal law, manufacturers must fix safety defects at no cost to owners.

Ford recalls hybrids and pickup trucks for power loss and tailgate issues

Ford is behind two of the most closely watched recalls in the new federal list. One covers 2027 Lincoln Corsair Hybrid and 2026 to 2027 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid models. NHTSA says a software or mechanical problem can cause the vehicles to shift unexpectedly into Neutral, creating a sudden loss of drive power.

The second Ford campaign involves 2026 to 2027 F-150 trucks and 2026 Super Duty models, including the F-250, F-350 and F-450. In those vehicles, tailgate support cables may fail unexpectedly. That defect could affect how the tailgate functions and create a safety concern for owners using the truck bed.

Toyota, GM, Chrysler and BMW recalls focus on seats, lighting and electrical fire risk

Toyota is recalling 2022 to 2026 Sienna Hybrid minivans because seat back latches may not stay locked in a crash, raising the risk of injury to passengers. General Motors is recalling 2026 Chevrolet Traverse and 2026 GMC Acadia vehicles over insufficient welds in the front seats, which may not hold up in a collision.

Chrysler, through FCA US, is recalling 2026 Dodge Durango SUVs because the taillights may fail to operate, which would violate federal lighting standards. BMW of North America is also recalling 2018 to 2020 BMW 530e iPerformance models, including xDrive versions, along with the 2018 740Le xDrive iPerformance, because a loose positive battery connection at the starter motor could create an electrical arc or fire hazard.

Transit buses and school-style coaches face steering, joint and lift defects

The recall list also includes several commercial bus makers. Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2025 to 2027 Thomas Built Buses models, including Saf-T-Liner C2, Jouley electric, EFX and HDX buses, because interior joint strength may fall short of federal safety requirements.

Forest River Bus is recalling a broad group of 2026 and 2027 commercial shuttle and transit buses sold under Champion, ElDorado, Glaval, Starcraft and StarTrans brands. NHTSA says steering caster bushing bolts may not have been tightened properly. BYD Coach & Bus is also recalling 2023 and 2024 BYD/Ride Type A buses because wheelchair lifts may move unintentionally during operation.

Heavy-duty truck recalls center on fuel hoses, wheel bearings and trailer welds

A common component problem involving disconnecting fuel filter hoses is driving several nearly identical recalls across the heavy-duty segment. PACCAR is recalling 2022 to 2027 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks, including T270, T280, T370, T380, T480, 536, 537, 548 and 567 models. Gillig, Battle Motors and Nova Bus are also covered by similar recalls for transit buses or vocational trucks.

Those vehicles include 2021 to 2026 Gillig Low Floor buses, 2021 to 2023 Battle Motors LET2 and LNT trucks, and 2022 to 2024 Nova Bus LFS and 2023 LFS Artic municipal buses. NHTSA says the hose issue can allow fuel to leak, creating a fire risk. Separate recalls cover Wabash National 2027 Van Trailers for incorrect wheel bearing lubrication and Great Dane 2027 Champion and Everest trailers for possible landing gear weld failures.

RV makers Heartland and Ember cite electrical hazards in seating circuits

Recreational vehicle owners are also included in the federal action. Heartland Recreational Vehicles is recalling select 2022 to 2024 travel trailers and fifth wheels sold under the Bighorn, Cyclone, Gravity, Road Warrior and Torque names. Ember Recreational Vehicles is recalling 2024 E-Series trailers.

In both cases, NHTSA says the problem involves inadequate circuit protection on power seating cords. That kind of electrical defect can create safety concerns in RV interiors, especially when the equipment is in regular use and exposed to the demands of travel, storage and living-space operation.

Owners and fleet managers are told to check VINs and arrange free repairs

NHTSA says owners, drivers and fleet managers should use the agency’s recall lookup tool to check whether a vehicle is affected. The tool accepts a 17-digit vehicle identification number or a license plate number, and it can show whether an open recall is listed.

If a vehicle appears in one of these campaigns, the next step is to contact an authorized dealer or certified service center and schedule the repair. The fixes are required to be free under federal law, and NHTSA is urging people not to wait if they think a passenger car, truck, bus or RV may be covered.
