Menchville Girl’s Basketball State Champions
The VHSL Class 5 Girl’s Basketball State Championship was more about the fundamentals of the game than about a contest. At the Virginia Commonwealth University Siegel Center the VHSL Class 5 State Championship was held at 6 p.m. on March 11, 2022. The Menchville Monarchs and the Woodgrove Wolverines faced off against each other in a game that every girl hooper dreams of. Menchville secured the win, 59-36, to get its first girl’s basketball title in the school’s history.
Junior guard Amari Smith led the team-high with 17 points. Atiana Williams, junior, had 13 points along with Jayleen Hallums. The Monarchs dominated the competition throughout the game, ending the first quarter with 17-6, 39-20 at halftime, and ending the 3rd quarter at 55-25.
Head Coach Adrian Webb said the game plan was to eliminate Woodgrove’s three-point shooters, which was a good plan. The Monarchs had 13-2 second-chance points, which came from the girls getting in the paint and rebonding, 36-25.
“We knew we had to attack to keep us ahead.” Keylee Harrison, junior center. This was true because a large portion of Menchville’s points came from driving to the hoop. Both teams played outstanding and they both had great seasons, without a doubt.
